In the UK the police are proving to be some of the most innovative users of social media including blogs and video sharing. The chief constable of North Wales Police is probably the most senior public sector officer to blog and Greater Manchester police used YouTube to publicise a video appealing for witnesses to the murder of Jessie James.
The latest innovations come from West Yorkshire Police with its 999TV initiative. The videos have also been posted on YouTube. This is great initiative and shows that public sector PR and communications people can frequently be at the forefront of developing innovative communications ideas that are ahead of their private sector colleagues.
None of these examples are ‘perfect’ examples of how to use social media and all of them could be easily improved. However, they all deserve praise for the fact they are actually happening.
